Applying the Solution
As more and more farmers heard of Deereâs singing plow, demand increased. Plows were shipped by boat up and down the Mississippi River and by wagon into the countryside. Many of them were taken west by settlers hoping to tame their portion of the vast territory beyond the Mississippi. By 1857, Deereâs company was producing ten thousand plows a year.

âJohn Deere
John Deereâs oldest surviving son, Charles, began working at the company in 1853. In the wake of the nationwide financial crisis of 1857, John Deere incorporated the company and brought his son into partnership. Having worked in positions from bookkeeper through various marketing and sales posts, Charles Deere proved to be an extremely capable businessman. The company was reincorporated as Deere and Company in 1868. Although John Deere would remain president of the company until his death in 1886, Charles ran the day-to-day operations from 1858 onward.
After 1858, John Deereâs involvement in the company he had founded focused on product development and sales. He also began to give more of his time to social and philanthropic causes, eventually entering local politics. He served in a variety of civic roles in Moline before becoming mayor in 1873. Until his death there on May 17, 1886, at the age of eighty-two, John Deere contributed generously to local institutions and causes. He was widely mourned at his death.
